Similkameen Stop: Orofino Vineyards
Our final day on the road, on the way home…
We pass through the Similkameen Valley on our way back from Osoyoos. The area is known for its agriculture, and in recent years is getting a reputation for its very good grape harvests. We had time for one stop, and thanks to a recommendation from my friend Nick, we chose Orofino Vineyards and Winery.
Orofino Vineyards & Winery
Stacey and I toasted with a delicious glass of Orofino Chardonnay over lunch in Oliver on Saturday, and on Monday we decided to make a short detour off Highway 3 and visit the winery.
As luck would have it, they were only open Monday to Friday, and they were mere days away from completely selling out. We called ahead, and they assured us that they were open and ready to receive guests.
I was immediately struck by how young John and his family were, and how sincere and passionate they were about their winemaking business. Our daughter skipped off to play with John and Virginia's kids, while her parents made new friends inside: the Pinot Noir, the Cab Merlot. We warmed to everything John poured.
It was a clean sweep. We bought one of everything, including the Late Harvest Muscat dessert wine.
Now open for 3 years, Orofino (loosely translated 'fine gold'), produces a mere 1500 cases each year. Like most small wineries, they sell directly to a customer list that they've built up over time. Check out their website if you would like to order some of their upcoming fall releases.
