Some of the delights on Vancouver Foodie Tours – Street food cart edition

On July 30th, I was lucky to be able to attend a Vancouver Foodie Tours sampling of some of the local food carts, situated around the business district in Vancouver's downtown core. If you love food, signing up for a Foodie Tour is definitely worth it. The Granville Foodie Tour, which is currently the only other tour being offered at this time, provides culinary experiences from restaurants along the Granville Entertainment District. The Food Cart Tour is new, and as I had not been to many of the food carts around town, was looking forward to my meeting with tour guide Michelle Ng and 5 other "tourists" to being my eating adventure!

Our tour started with one of the first street food carts in the city, Japadog, located at the corner of Smythe and Burrard Street, for a sample of their Beef Terimayo dog. The small portion was a perfect way to begin. Japadog is so well known that it has been on tv in Japan, and there is a "wall" of photos of famous personalities that have eaten there. Japadog is looking to expand into New York in 2012.

Our second stop was at The Kaboom Box, located at Robson and Granville. All seafood served here is Oceanwise Certified, is locally sourced (except for the cheese curds, which come from Quebec), and all packaging is compostable and biodegradable. Our oyster po'boy sandwich and mushroom gravy poutine was more than satisfying!

Next up we headed to Nu Greek Street, an offshoot of Nu Restaurant and Lounge, which is located in front of skytrain entrance at Granville and Georgia Streets. Freshly made soft pita engulfs chicken, lamb or vegetarian souvlaki, topped with ultra-garlicky tzatziki. Delicious! And this just in, on August 1st Nu Greek Street 2 opened up at the corner of Howe and Dunsmuir Streets.

We finally made our way to the last stop on our tour, and not a moment too soon, as many of us were getting quite full! Feastro the Rolling Bistro, the purple truck located at the corner of Thurlow and Cardero Street (across from the Olympic Torch), serves food that is brought over fresh that morning from the Sunshine Coast. Our selections of Fish & Chips, featured local red snapper with pommes frites, tartar sauce and Pacific Rim slaw.

While we enjoyed a very sunny day for the World's Best Street Eats Tour, beverages were not included with our samples, so be sure to bring your own or make sure you have some money to purchase something at one of the carts. There is also plenty of food being served, so if you don't come with an appetite, a container to hold the leftovers is also recommended. Bon Apetit!
