Okanagan Elegance: Nk’Mip Cellars Qwam Qwmt Chardonnay 2021

As the holiday season set in, Stacey and I had the pleasure of unboxing a truly special bottle: the Nk’Mip Cellars Qwam Qwmt Chardonnay 2021. Delivered in a beautifully branded wooden box wrapped in a red ribbon, this wine was more than just a treat for the palate—it was an invitation to experience the rich cultural and viticultural traditions of North America’s first Indigenous-owned winery.

A Chardonnay with a Fresh Perspective

The 2021 Qwam Qwmt Chardonnay is a wine that feels like a return to form for Okanagan winemaking style when it comes to Chardonnay. It presents a fresh and inviting character with smooth, subtle oak, allowing the fruit to shine rather than being overshadowed by heavy barrel aging. On the palate, it’s balanced and approachable, making it an excellent choice for an everyday luxury that Chardonnay lovers will appreciate.

Enjoying this wine with close friends over a holiday meal, each sip was relished. The elegance and finesse of the Chardonnay complemented the warm, festive atmosphere, setting the perfect tone for the evening.

Nk’Mip’s Commitment to Excellence

Nk’Mip Cellars describes its Qwam Qwmt series as wines that achieve excellence. In the Okanagan language spoken by the Osoyoos Indian Band, Qwam Qwmt (kw-em kw-empt) translates to “achieving excellence,” and this limited-production Chardonnay certainly lives up to the name. Sourced from the finest grapes grown on the 40-year-old Inkameep Vineyards, it reflects the deep respect and connection that Nk’Mip has with the land.

A Cultural Experience in Every Bottle

Beyond the wine itself, the experience of opening this bottle was enriched by the beautifully designed packaging and the meaningful cultural elements included. Accompanying the wine were printed materials describing the Four Food Chiefs of Syilx culture. These revered figures—Black Bear (Skemxist), Chinook Salmon (N’tyxtix), Bitterroot (Spitlem), and Saskatoon Berry (Siya?)—symbolize key teachings about balance, respect, and sustainability, values that guide Nk’Mip Cellars in their winemaking philosophy.

The inclusion of Four Food Chiefs ornaments, crafted by artist Taylor Baptiste, added a heartfelt touch. Baptiste’s artwork captures the spirit of gathering, tradition, and community, themes that resonate deeply during the holiday season. Her roots in the Osoyoos Indian Band and her connection to the land shine through in her work, creating a bridge between culture and celebration.

The Qwam Qwmt Chardonnay 2021 is a testament to that tradition, offering a refined yet welcoming expression of the varietal.

For those looking to explore the excellence of BC wines, this Chardonnay is a perfect place to start. Whether shared with loved ones over a festive meal or enjoyed on a quiet evening, it embodies the warmth, history, and craftsmanship that make Okanagan wines truly special.
